Why does everyone freak over Mercury Retrograde?

Even if you're not that into astrology, you’ve probably still heard of Mercury Retrograde once or twice (or literally every single time it happens because - memes). Well, it's happening again on Sunday July 7th so let’s prepare.

What is Mercury Retrograde?

In astrology, the word ‘retrograde’ means that something is moving backwards. So, when Mercury is in retrograde, it appears to be moving from east to west (instead of its normal west to east orbit). Every visible planet goes retrograde at some point, so it isn’t just a Mercury thing.

Because Mercury is the planet situated closest to the Sun, its orbit is much shorter than Earth’s. About three or four times a year, Mercury speeds past Earth, and that is when we experience a Mercury Retrograde period.

Mercury rules all types of communication;  listening, speaking, learning, reading, editing, researching, negotiating, selling, and buying. It also rules all formal contracts and agreements, transportation and travel. So when Mercury goes into retrograde, these areas tend to get scrambled or spin out of control.

Why does Mercury Retrograde happen?

When a planet retrogrades, astrologically it is in a resting or sleeping state. Therefore, whilst Mercury takes a break, the activities that it governs doesn’t have a functioning, awake planet to supervise them - hence the mayhem.

What happens during Mercury Retrograde?

When Mercury retrogrades, think of it as an instant signal that the wind is changing direction. Something is in flux up on the road ahead, but at this time you can’t see it.

Stagnation and frustration most often accompanies us during retrogrades. Don’t make any important moves when Mercury is retrograde. These phases are considered poor timing for making an hard decisions, launching new endeavours or making new agreements.

However, Mercury can be a blessing in disguise. Mercury rules anything that begins with “re”: redo, reassess, repair, repeat, redesign, or revisit. So instead of looking to create new opportunities or get new things, improve what you have now. We’re given an opportunity to perhaps fix the little faults of our plans and better prepare ourselves for certain events or even grander opportunities. It’s a time to reconfigure and even clean out our energetic space to welcome abundance.

Although these Mercury retrograde periods can be frustrating, they are often useful too. Mercury retrograde allows us to stop, look, listen, and redirect our energies more productively. Mercury also helps us find closure to certain situations.

Basically,  you shouldn’t freak out, your life won’t fall apart and just be aware of the glitches that may arise.
